Albufera Valencia

Albufera Valencia

... Birthplace of Paella!

The Albufera Valencia (l'Albufera) is a very beautiful and popular nature reserve in Valencia. As well as being famous for the lovely freshwater lake and fishing, the area is also where you'll find the rice fields of Valencia.

This is the birthplace of paella and at the surrounding restaurants you can sample and enjoy gastronomic feasts of a variety of paella dishes which always include an ample supply of seafood.

The further inland you travel, seafood is replaced by adding more chicken and rabbit.

Green beans, peppers and in-season vegetables are also added so vegetarians can also enjoy a veggie-paella dish of their choosing.

There are many little fishing villages in the area and the village of El Palmar is full of wonderful restaurants and famous having the best paella in Valencia. This is also where you can indulge in the traditional dish of baby eels, garlic and pepper.

The novel 'Canas y barros' (Reeds and Mud) by Valenciano author Vicente Blasco Ibàñez gives an excellent account of this lovely fishing area and how people used to live.

Albufera Nature Park Sightseeing Tour

Lying to the south of the city of Valencia is the Albufera region. Its freshwater lagoon is an important natural reserve for the surrounding areas. Three canals (two natural and a third man-made) connect the lagoon and surrounding wetlands with the sea, and each has its own characteristic flora and fauna.

La Albufera is an important stopover point for migratory birds and a nesting area for resident birds. This scenic region is a must see for lovers of wildlife.
