BARRIO DEL CARMEN
Valencia City Spain
Historical, Fashionable & Trendy...Barrio del Carmen, or el Carme as it's locally known, is peaceful during the day and bursting with life at night!

This is a very small area located to the north east of the Old Quarter. The pedestrianized Plaza del Carmen is dominated by the lovely old church of Carmen and fountains and orange trees.
This is an idyllic place to spend some time exploring all the local historic and artistic places of interest such as the Convent of Carmen which is a major center for arts and culture in Valencia.
The area is easily accessed from Calle Serranos and if you're coming from the other side of the Jardins del Turia (old Turia riverbed), you can reach 'el Carme' by crossing the bridge - Puente de Serranos - Serranos bridge.
Torres de Serranos Torres de Serranos (Serranos Tower) and Torres de Cuart are two gateways which were once part of the old wall of Valencia. Both these towers mark the entrance to the Old Quarter of Valencia.
Torres de Serranos was built by Pere Balaguer between the years 1392 and 1398 and for three hundred years it was used as a prison for the nobility of the area.
IVAM A must to visit whilst you are here is IVAM [Valencian Institute of Modern Art] which is located in Barrio del Carmen. As well as the many fantastic exhibitons of modern art, there's a lovely restaurant and cafè with terrace to relax on.
Bohemian Area of ValenciaMany of the magnificent old palaces and townhouses in Barrio del Carmen have been turned into restaurants, trendy shops and clubs. A very Bohemian area full of artists and tourists enjoying the ambience of the tiny little streets and popular restaurants, bars and clubs like those in Calle de Caballeros.
To enjoy Valencia to the full take a stroll down this street especially on a Friday or Saturday evening as this is where all the action is. Valencia nightlife starts late and things don't really come alive until after 10 or 11pm.
Nightlife in el Carme Take a stroll down Calle de Caballeros from Plaza de la Virgin to Torres de Cuart and you'll be able to enjoy a drink or meal at one of the many popular restaurants, bars and clubs and open air terraces such as San Jaume. Why not start your night at Bolsería at 41 Calle Bolsería. It's one of the most popular and trendy bars/clubs in the area with live music ranging from jazz to hip-hop. Cafe Lisboa at Plaza Dr Collado, 9 is open all day until very late and is one of the most popular cafes in Valencia.
