Books on Valencia Spain

All about books on Valencia Spain...

Casa del Libro Valencia
Casa del Libro Valencia

There are many books on Valencia Spain and it's definitely a good idea to read up on Valencia before you get here. You'll enjoy Valencia much more and if you get a map you won't get lost!

The Soriano Bookshop, Xàtiva, 15 -Tel: 96 351 0378 and The English Book Centre (Calle Pascual y Genís/Pascual i Genís 16 - Tel: 96 351 9288) are both very good.

There are three El Corte Inglés department stores in Calle Colón and the store in the centre has a good selection of books.

Casa del Libre is a lovely little bookshop just off Calle Colón in Passeig Russafa (Tel: 96 391 52 47). It has a cafè which comes in very handy when you feel like browsing for your favorite book.

Libreria Patagonia is a very small bookshop situated at 106, Calle Guillem de Castro. It's close to the bridge at Pont de Fusta underneath a huge block of flats. (You can also pick up the tram to the beach from here).

The following books on Valencia are available on-line from Waterstone's or at bookshops, El Corte Inglés department stores or kiosks in Valencia. All Valencia is only available in Valencia.

BOOKS ON VALENCIA SPAIN

duende
Duende by Jason Webster
As a passionate lover of Spain, and after living in Madrid for some years, it's hardly surprising that after reading 'Duende', I should head straight for Valencia. The book begins just outside Elche which is near Alicante in the region of Valencia. It's an account of a young man's search for 'duende' (roughly meaning spirit/soul). His search spreads to Andalucia and Madrid and his subsequent encounters and experiences offer a vivid insight into the Flamenco underworld.

Jason Webster lives in the Old Quarter of Valencia and also in the surrounding countryside of Valencia. He has recently written another book called Guerra which gives a very vivid account of the Spanish Civil War.

Travelers Tales Spain
Travelers' Tales Spain
This lovely book edited by Lucy MacCauley contains true stories of authors such as Gabriel García Marquez and Penelope Casas on their travels through Spain. As well as being a very enjoyable read, this book must definitely be included in my list of 'books on Valencia Spain'. For those visiting Valencia during the last Wednesday in August 2006, Louis de Bernières has given a very vivid account of the fantastic festival which is held every year in Valencia called La Tomatina (battle of tomatoes), which is aptly entitled 'Seeing Red'

An interesting point to note is that Valenciano novelist Joanot Martorell, wrote the first European novel, 'Tirant lo Blanch' (The White Knight).

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse by Vicente Blasco Ib'anez

As well as having a major avenue in Valencia named after him in the University area of the city - Avenguda/Avenida Blasco Ibáñez, Valenciano novelist Vicente Blasco Ibáñez (1867-1928), is internationally famous for his novel, Los Cuatros Jinetes del Apocalipsis (1916)- The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Filmed twice it also starred Hollywood heart-throb Rudolph Valentino.

Some of his earlier novels include:

  • 'Flor de mayo' (1895) - (translated in 1921 as The Mayflower).
  • 'La barraca' (The Cabin, 1898).
  • 'Canas y barro' (translated 1928 and 1966 - Reeds and Mud).
  • 'La catedral' (1905, translated in 1909 as The Shadow of the Cathedral).

A museum dedicated to the works and life of this novelist can be found at:
Casa Museu Blasco Ibáñez, Calle Isabel de Villen 1, Tel: 963 564 786. From Oct-Mar 9.15-14.00 and 16.30-20.00 (Sundays - closes at 14.00).
