Convent of Carmen
Barrio del Carmen
The Convent of Carmen is now the 'Center of Carmen' and is linked to the Bellas Artes Museum de Valencia. This lovely cultural center and museum has been built in the old Convent of the Carmen and houses temporary exhibitions which are open to the public.
The convent was built in 1238 and consecrated in 1343 and is located opposite the lovely old Church of Carmen in Barrio del Carmen.
In 1936 part of the convent and Church of Carmen were engulfed in flames and many works or art were destroyed.
During the 60s the convent was used as a school and was later developed into what is now one of the major arts and cultural centers in Valencia. The museum recently hosted the popular 'Bienal de Valencia', an exhibition based on water entitled 'Water, without you I am not'.
On entering the center, you are greeted with the relaxing sound of fountains and a covered area where you can chill out and enjoy a drink. (Opening times: Tues - Sun: 10.00 to 20.00 closed Mon).
