Torres de Serranos in Barrio del Carmen, Valencia Old Town

torresdeserranosThe twin towered Torres de Serranos are situated in Plaza de Los Fueros and nearby is Torres de Quart. These medieval gates are all that remains of the old wall which once surrounded the city.

The gates overlook the Turia Gardens and are linked to the district of Xerea by Puente de Serranos (Serranos Bridge).

Built between 1392 and 1398 by Pere Balaguer, they served as a prison for the wealthy nobles and knights from 1586 until 1887.

barriodelcarmenstreetsTorres de Serranos were once the gateway to the north and Barcelona and are situated in the trendy area of Barrio del Carmen in the north east of the old town.

This small area is surrounded by Calle de Guillem de Castro, Calle Serranos and Calle Quart and Calle Caballeros which is great for nightlife in Valencia.

Every year the Fallera Mayor announces the start of the annual festival of Las Fallas from Torres de Serranos.  The festival starts on the last Sunday in February and the fallas queen marks the official opening of the festival.
