Robert Graves
Novelist and Poet

Robert Graves lived on Majorca Island from 1929 until his death at the age of 90 on the 7 December 1985. He is buried in the cemetery of the village church overlooking the village that he loved.
A simple gravestone marks the resting place of the world famous poet and novelist who was born in Wimbledon and endured a lasting love for Deią and Majorca.
Graves arrived in Majorca in 1929 and lived in Palma. Shortly after he bought Ca n'Alluny (remote house) on the edge of the beautiful village of Deia.
He set up home and with a printing press brought from England began to publish his works. This is how he financed his lifestyle whilst living in Deią.
During the 1950s his literary career took off and his idyllic lifestyle led to many wanting the same kind of life. Movie stars and artists descended on this remote village in the mountains and set up a community of freethinkers.
Guests at Ca n'Alluny included many friends such as Anais Nin, Ava Gardner, Alec Guiness, Kingsley Amis, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Peter Ustinov.
Graves wrote historical novels such as The Golden Fleece, King Jesus and Count Belisarius and he wrote I, Claudius whilst living in Deia. He was also a translator of Classical Latin and Ancient Greek.
Two of Graves eight children still live in Majorca and his son Tomįs wrote about his childhood and adventures whilst growing up in Deia. His book Tuning Up At Dawn gives a vivid account of Majorcan culture and his amazing life whilst growing up in Deią.
La Casa de Robert Graves In 2007 the family home was turned into a museum. It's closed on Monday and open from Tuesday to Saturday 10.00am 17.00pm and Sunday 10.00am 15.00pm. Back from Robert Graves to Things to do in Majorca
