Deia

Majorca Island

Deia

Deia is like a hidden jewel nestled under the Serra de Tramuntana (Tramuntana mountains) on the north coast of Majorca island.

During the 20th century philosophers, artists and writers made this remote paradise in the mountains their home and left a lasting legacy which continues to this day.

Deia ChurchOverlooking the village and valley is the lovely church of Sant Joan Baptista.

This is the resting place of the famous novelist and poet Robert Graves who lived here from 1929 until his death in 1985.

Deia

The steep village high street is edged with exclusive boutiques, restaurants, cafes and lovely hotels where many of the rich and famous have stayed.

Many actors and writers have lived and still live in the area. Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones are just a few of those who enjoy this beautiful paradise on the north coast of Majorca.

In the late 19th century Jules Verne, Gertrude Stein and Sara Bernhardt were amongst those who stayed in the village and Archduke Ludwig Salvatore of Ausria loved it so much he made it his home.

Since the 1920s the village has been a refuge to many freethinkers and bohemian artists. It's truly a magical place to be. Once you've been here you'll never forget it and return many times. The lucky ones are those who arrived in the 1950s when property was quite cheap and who live here today.

Deia Restaurant

The village still retains the bohemian atmosphere and there are pretty cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy a drink or Catalan dish.

If you're here in July or August you can enjoy the famous music festival which Tomas Graves writes about in his book Tuning Up At Dawn. Jimi Hendrix, Mike Oldfield and many others have attended and played at this festival high in the mountains in this mystical and lovely village in Majorca.
