Valencia Grand Prix 2008
Harbor-side location for 2008 Valencia Grand Prix... 2008 European Grand Prix Valencia For the first time Valencia is to stage the European Grand Prix and the inaugural race will be on 24 August 2008. The stunning newly designed street circuit has attracted so many Formula One fans that just ten days after the tickets went on sale, Valencia has been confirmed as a sell-out.
On May 10 2007, the Valencia regional government confirmed that Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone signed a seven-year contract with event organizers Valmor Sport.
The European Grand Prix will be held on a street circuit around the streets of Valencia near the city’s brand new Americas Cup Port and will be reminiscent of the Monaco Grand Prix. Spain will now have two Grand Prix races a season... one in Valencia and the other in Barcelona. (Official Valencia website: Valencia Street Circuit)
Although very happy about the event, champion racing driver Fernando Alonso (from Asturias in Spain), critisized the project saying Valencia already had a great track at Cheste (30kms from Valencia). Ecclestone had said that racing at the Ricardo Tomo Circuit would be too tight for F1 cars to race properly. The circuit will be designed by German Hermann Tilke, architect of some of the most modern tracks in the world.
Alonso recently won the 2007 European Grand Prix (22 July 2007), by closing the gap on Lewis Hamilton to two points in the battle for the world title after taking victory in a stunning European Grand Prix.
The 2008 European Grand Prix will be greatly anticipated not only by the many international motor racing fans but also by the fans in Valencia.
Note: - The very famous Ricardo Tormo Circuit (named after Valencian motorcycling world champion Ricardo Tormo) is just a short drive from the city of Valencia in the town of Cheste.
